What Does a BCBA Do Day-to-Day at ABCs of Learning?
A day in the life of a BCBA at ABCs of Learning is dynamic and rewarding. As a BCBA, you are the clinical leader for your clients’ ABA programs. Here are some of the key day-to-day responsibilities you can expect:
- Designing Individualized ABA Programs: BCBAs assess each child’s needs and craft tailored treatment plans. You’ll set personalized goals and behavior intervention strategies, drawing from evidence-based practices to help children with autism build new skills.
- Overseeing Therapy Implementation: While RBTs work one-on-one with the children to implement these plans, you monitor progress closely. This might involve observing sessions, analyzing data trends, and providing feedback to ensure therapies are effective and engaging.
- Directly Supervising RBTs: Every BCBA at ABCs of Learning directly supervises a team of RBTs, who are the front-line therapists working with your clients. You’ll guide and mentor RBTs through regular check-ins, model intervention techniques, and ensure they have the support needed to deliver quality therapy.
- Collaborating with Families: A big part of your day is also communicating with parents and caregivers. BCBAs often conduct parent meetings or training, sharing progress updates and coaching families on strategies to use at home so that gains in therapy carry over to everyday life.
- Measuring and Celebrating Progress: BCBAs are data-driven. You’ll review data that RBTs collect on each client’s behaviors and skills, making data-informed adjustments to treatment plans as needed. And of course, you get to celebrate the big and small victories – from a child saying a new word to successfully trying a new food – alongside the families.
A BCBA at ABCs of Learning spends time one-on-one with clients and RBTs, ensuring therapy is both fun and effective.
Our BCBAs truly wear many hats each day, functioning as program designer, supervisor, coach, and cheerleader. No two days are exactly the same – you might start the morning reviewing a new client assessment, spend the afternoon training an RBT on a behavior plan, and end the day high-fiving a kiddo who mastered a goal. Through it all, the focus is on creating a positive, supportive environment where children can thrive and reach their fullest potential.
Supervising RBTs and Collaborating with the Clinical Director
One of the most important aspects of a BCBA’s role at ABCs of Learning is leadership and teamwork. You won’t be doing this alone – BCBAs here work in close partnership with both their RBTs and our Clinical Director to ensure each client receives the best care possible.
- Mentoring and Leading RBTs: As mentioned, direct supervision of RBTs is a core duty for our BCBAs. This means you’ll be providing hands-on mentorship to a group of highly trained RBTs who deliver the daily therapy to clients. You guide them on implementing behavior plans correctly, maintaining data integrity, and using compassionate, ethical practices. By observing sessions and offering feedback, you help your RBTs grow their skills and confidence. Our approach is very team-oriented – BCBAs and RBTs frequently huddle to problem-solve challenges or adjust techniques, ensuring consistency and quality across every session. This close collaboration not only benefits our clients but also helps RBTs along their own career paths (many RBTs go on to pursue BCBA certification themselves, inspired by your example!).
- Close Collaboration with the Clinical Director: At ABCs of Learning, BCBAs collaborate closely with our Clinical Director on program development and clinical decision-making. The Clinical Director (who is an experienced BCBA) is there to support you with resources, guidance, and an extra set of eyes on challenging cases. You might meet with the Clinical Director for weekly case reviews, to discuss assessment results, or just to brainstorm creative interventions for a particular child. This supportive oversight ensures you never feel “alone” in managing cases – there’s always someone to consult, which is especially valuable when you encounter something new or complex. In fact, our BCBAs have “full support from our Clinical Director” for every client they oversee. This team-based model means better outcomes for families and a strong professional network for you.
- Interdisciplinary Teamwork: Beyond RBTs and the Clinical Director, BCBAs here also coordinate with other professionals. Many of our clients receive services like speech or occupational therapy. You’ll have opportunities to talk with speech-language pathologists, OTs, and educators to align goals and strategies. This holistic collaboration ensures that everyone involved in the child’s development is on the same page, creating a cohesive plan that accelerates progress.
Working together is at the heart of our philosophy. ABCs of Learning is actually a BCBA-owned and operated clinic, which means the leadership truly understands the challenges and needs of behavior analysts. It’s a place where your professional judgment is respected, and your growth is prioritized. Through supervising and collaborating, you’ll find a nurturing environment where teamwork makes the dream work – our collective expertise drives meaningful change for the children and families we serve.
Manageable Caseloads for Quality Care
Ever heard horror stories of BCBAs juggling 20+ cases at once? That’s not how we do things at ABCs of Learning. We firmly believe that to provide quality ABA therapy, our clinicians need to have manageable caseloads. Here, the maximum caseload for a BCBA is around 10–12 clients, depending on case intensity. We cap the number of families you serve so that you can devote ample time and energy to each one.
What does a caseload of 10–12 look like in practice? It means you’ll typically oversee about ten clients’ programs (sometimes fewer if some cases are very intensive). Each client may receive 10-20 hours of therapy per week (some more, some less), and you will allocate your schedule to support all of them effectively. With a balanced caseload, you can:
- Give Personalized Attention: You’ll have the bandwidth to really know each client – their goals, challenges, and what strategies work best for them. This personal touch is crucial in ABA. Smaller caseloads let you attend important meetings (like IEP meetings for school, or family consults) without spreading yourself too thin.
- Maintain High Quality Supervision: The BACB recommends substantial supervision hours for each RBT and client. With a reasonable number of cases, you can spend plenty of time supervising each RBT – conducting overlaps, reviewing session videos, and providing in-depth feedback. Our model ensures you meet supervision requirements and then some, so no RBT or child falls through the cracks.
- Achieve Better Outcomes: Quite simply, when a BCBA isn’t overloaded, the families benefit. You can be proactive rather than reactive – updating behavior plans promptly, customizing materials, and brainstorming creative interventions. Our BCBAs consistently note that having a lighter caseload (versus large agency settings) allows them to see faster progress and celebrate more client milestones.
At ABCs of Learning, quality always comes first. By keeping your caseload at a maximum of about 10–12, we ensure you can do your best work and feel proud of the outcomes. It’s one more way we take care of our team and the children we serve.
